Zurich as the most expensive city in Europe, is also one of the most picturesque European cities you’ll get a chance to visit! You shouldn’t skip it, just because it’s not a low budget destination. Despite its expensive price tag, there are many things to do in Zurich that you can enjoy without spending a fortune. From swimming in Zurichsee to window shopping at Bahnhofstrasse, here’s a list of what to do on your trip.
things to do in Zurich
Feed The Swans At the Lake
The famous Lake Zurich, or as I like to call it ‘Swan Lake‘. It’s one of the top tourist attractions. Enjoy the beautiful view as the water reflects the sunlight while the Alps in the distance create a beautiful scenery. There are many cafes, bars and parks that surround the lake. It’s nice just to have a stroll along it. People can swim in the lake, paddle board or cruise around on the boat. When I went to visit in April, the water was still too cold to swim in it. Make sure you to stay there for a breath-taking sunset!
Wander Around Old Town
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the Old Town is calm and charming. You can get lost in the beauty of narrow cobbled streets and flags flying high from the buildings. There are many small boutiques, cafes and bars – but these are quite expensive, so best to skip on a coffee there!
Experience swiss Nightlife
Whether you’re a party animal or just fancy few drinks in the evening, Langstrasse is the place to head. As the name suggests, it’s a long street, full of bars and nightclubs, popular for its vibrant nightlife. Although the nightlife is expensive over there, some nightclubs offer free entry.
Drink From A Fountain
Hangover sightseeing the next day shouldn’t be a problem, as the city has the largest number of fountains in the world. There are approximately 1,200 fountains with drinking water. You can easily use your bottle to re-fill water instead of buying a new one from a shop. It’s one of the things to do in Zurich if you want to save up some money.
Read A Book In Platzspitz Park
If you don’t know what to do in Zurich, grab a book and head to Platzspitz park. Back in the ’80s, Platzspitz park used to be the main gathering point for the heroin addicts. The drug problem became so bad with drug addicts coming from all over Europe (as many as 20,000!) that authorities couldn’t deal with it anymore. In fact, police were no longer allowed to enter the park or make arrests. Instead, clean needles were given out to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS… Now, the park is totally clean and family friendly. Funnily enough, I’ve picked up a random book from my shelf – Skagboys, which tells a story about heroin addicts…
See The City From The Top
Lindenhofplatz is a park on top of a small hill. From there you can get an awesome panoramic view of the city. It should be on top of your places to see in Zurich.
Walk Down The Bahnhofstrasse
One of the most expensive shopping streets in the world! It features a range of high-end stores, including Gucci, Burberry, and Chanel. If you’re a budget traveller, all you will be doing is window shopping. If you do have some cash to splash, it’s best to head to cheaper areas like Neiderdorf or Langstrasse.
