La Fortuna is a small town at the base of the giant Arenal Volcano. There are many souvenir shops and restaurants on the streets. The rest of the village is surrounded by the nature. The name La Fortuna meaning ‘The Fortune’ has been given for its extremely fertile land. Some people also say it’s because when the Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968, it caused extensive damage to the three villages nearby, but it did not affect La Fortuna town. This is why you will hear ‘Pura Vida’ (‘Pure Life’ - phrase often used by Costa Ricans) more often here than anywhere else. It became Costa Rica’s most popular destination, where people from all over the world come to admire the majestic Arenal Volcano.
How To Get From San Jose To La Fortuna
You can catch a bus from Terminal 7-10 located on Calle 8. There are ‘direct’ buses (which still makes few stops on the way to pick up more passengers). The bus leaves at the following times: 6.15am, 8.40am and 11.30am. The journey takes about 4 hours. You need to purchase a ticket beforehand from the desk located on the third floor. The fare costs 2495 colones (around $5). Make sure to get there early to get a seat, as the bus fills up very quickly.
Where To Stay In La Fortuna?
During my five nights in La Fortuna Costa Rica, I stayed at the budget hostel ‘La Choza Inn’. It was only $8 per night in a 10-bed dorm. Perks of staying there include good wifi, breakfast, free trip to Free Natural Hot Springs, and unlimited $15 shuttle to take you to five different destinations in La Fortuna.
